Addressing key issues in accounting education
More than 75 participants from universities and professional accounting bodies in Australia, Singapore and Vietnam attended the Accounting Educators' Conference at RMIT University.

The conference is a forum for accounting educators to share their research findings in addressing key issues and developments in accounting education.
The program featured two distinguished plenary speakers, Professor Philip Hancock, University of Western Australia, and Professor Aileen Pierce, University College Dublin (UCD).
Professor Hancock is a Professor of Accounting and Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning. He is also Chair of the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) Teaching and Learning Network.
In 2010, he was selected by the ABDC to lead the Accounting Learning Outcomes Working Party (ALOWP).
The ALOWP was responsible for writing threshold learning outcomes for all Bachelor and Master Degrees in accounting offered by higher education providers in Australia.
These learning outcomes were published by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council as part of the Learning and Teaching Academic Standards Project.
Professor Pierce is an Associate Professor in Accountancy in the School of Business at UCD. She teaches in the areas of financial accounting and reporting and is also currently involved in implementing a new undergraduate business curriculum.
Her current research focuses on professionalism in accounting, professional ethics, and integrity of financial reporting communications.
Professor Pierce spoke about some of the competing pressures that can impede the development of effective strategies for educating entry level and experienced accountants.
"Educating accountants can be interpreted as a subset of accounting education," she said.
"In addition to accountants fulfilling their traditional roles relating to governance and financial reporting, the practice of accounting is of fundamental importance to contemporary business, non-business enterprise, and society more generally."
The RMIT Accounting Educators' Conference is an annual event, sponsored by CPA Australia.
