The ensemble ARPARLA - Davide Monti, violin, Maria Christina Cleary, harp - takes its inspiration from a desire to speak with music (parla in Italian means “speak”), using the soft and refined sonorities of the harp and the expressive range of colours of the violin, both instruments played according to the historical way of playing. With energy and enthusiasm the Cleary & Monti Duo had given concerts receiving excellent reviews from many different audiences, in different parts of the world, bringing a musical message that goes beyond language, culture and social class.
Their repertoire focusses on two specific periods of music in which the instruments perfectly express the synthesis of the historical musical aesthetic: the Baroque period (17th century) and the transition period between Classicism and Romanticism (end of the 18th century, beginning of the 19th century). Since 2005 Arparla has performed in numerous venues, not only in Italy, their place of residence and inspiration, but around the world: the Cleary and Monti Duo's first tour was in Japan, performing in Wakayama, Fuji, Fujisawa, and Tokyo where they also gave master-classes in Early Music and Historical Performance Practice.
In Europe they have performed in Germany, France, Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium and Greece. They have also performed in Canada at the Montreal Early Music Festival. Other festivals include Aqua Music Amsterdam, Itinéraire Baroque Perigord, Early Music Festival Brugges, Rethymno Renaissance Festival and the International Mozart Festival Rovereto. They have toured Belgium performing for the Italian Consulate, French Society of Literature Liege and collaborated with the Menuhin Foundation MUS-E project. In 2009 they performed Spohr's Double Concerto for the first time on original instruments.
ARPARLA has travelled to Uganda giving a series of concerts and lessons in Kampala to sustain the NGO COOPI, performing for the Italian Embassy, the Irish Embassy, Makerere University, The International University of Kampala and the Africa Institute of Music. Besides performing, Arparla has taught at the Royal Conservatory The Hague, Guildhall School of Music London, Conservatory of Padova and held master-classes at Corinaldo, Italy and Japan. ARPARLA has already recorded two Duo CDs under the Stradivarius label. The first recording, So mach' die Augen zu is of the Chamber works and harp solos of Louis Spohr, the first recording of this composer using original instruments. It has received rare reviews from international journals. Their second CD, Le Grazie del Violino, is a collection of Italian instrumental music of the 17th century including Marini, Pandolfi-Mealli, Selma, Uccellini, Frescobaldi, Merula and Fontana. This recording culminates many years of research into expressiveness, Affects and musical Rhetoric.
