Pets on campus guideline

Intent

To provide instruction in relation to bringing pets into University buildings and grounds.

Scope

This Guideline refers to staff, students, contactors and visitors in all University buildings and grounds.

Exclusions

Guide dogs are excluded as being prohibited in University buildings and grounds

Guideline

For health and safety reasons, RMIT University advises against staff, students, contractors and visitors from taking pets into any University buildings. The University also discourages pets being brought onto any campus grounds and will prohibit any pet that displays aggressive behaviour or is a nuisance to others. Any pets brought on to RMIT grounds must be restrained at all times.

Animals can be unpredictable, have uncontrollable behaviour, can contribute to accidents in the workplace and can affect the learning experience of students.

Sick animals also carry their own diseases and parasitic risk that should not be imposed on colleagues. Also animals may pose a risk to staff and students with allergies.
