1. Discuss their position description, role and responsibilities of the position, how these fit into the goals of the team/school/department and RMIT, and what your expectations are, including relevant performance standards and/or measures.

2. Explain reporting relationships, the structure of the school/group and how it fits into the wider university community.

3. Advise the new staff member that they are on probation, the length of their probation and what probation means. Discuss how often you will meet with the staff member, particularly throughout the probation period to review progress and revisit expectations. Refer to page 8 of this kit for guidelines on probation review meeting intervals. Use the Initial Induction and Probation Meeting Form (page 9 of this kit) to plan and record induction and probation with the new starter.

4. Provide time to complete Discover RMIT for new staff online induction.

5. Book staff member into the next Discover RMIT campus tour - available on the ‘Discover RMIT for new staff website.

Academic staff specific induction activities

  • Advise the staff member of their nominated supervisor. The supervisor is normally the head of the academic unit in which the academic is employed, unless the Vice-Chancellor or PVC has delegated in writing another academic employee classified at Level C or above to be the staff member’s supervisor. The academic staff member may also request an alternative supervisor.
  • Ensure Research and innovation strategy (PDF 50 KB, 9p) and Student equity and diversity strategy (PDF 98.15 KB, 19p) is available for the staff member to read.
  • Explain University key dates, local area academic timelines and processes and where to seek assistance.
  • For levels A and B (excluding research-only positions) enrol in Graduate Certificate

TAFE staff specific induction activities

  • Complete the TAFE checklist available on the RMIT AQTF site.
  • Ensure new TAFE staff member is aware of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) requirements.
  • Ensure new TAFE staff member has the required qualification competencies OR organise for the staff member to complete relevant qualifications (TAFE teacher qualifications).
  • Ensure new TAFE staff member has provided a copy of the Working with Children check receipt and a copy has been forwarded onto Human Resources
