Life Cycle Assessment

The aim of the LCA group is to further understand the relationship between the full life cycle of products and services and environmental impacts.

The LCA group aims to:

  • Work in partnership with committed organisations to develop and apply independent, evidence-based sustainability strategy
  • Be Australia’s leader in the development and delivery of life cycle training
  • Be active in the development and dissemination of LCA methodology and life cycle tools
  • Support other Centre for Design and RMIT groups in achieving research targets

Background

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a scientific method used to quantify, understand and evaluate the environmental impacts of a product or service over the full life cycle; from cradle to grave. LCA can be applied to any product or service; from major infrastructure projects to consumer goods.

The process of LCA involves establishing the reasons and questions to undertake the study, collecting data related to the life cycle, computer modelling of environmental impacts and interpretation and application of the results.
