This program unites like-minded people to explore complex sustainability issues.

You'll collaborate on projects tackling problems in areas of water usage, energy, food, liveable cities, waste management, climate management or risk management.

You'll extend your views of sustainability and sustainable practice by:

* Ideas developed from Brian Eno's 'The Big Here and Long Now'.

You'll develop capabilities to achieve sustainable practice by:

Duration

1.5 years full-time or 3 years part-time

This duration incorporates Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate.

Classes are held in intensive mode - normally 3 or 4 full days per semester (mostly Saturdays). Elective courses may run as evening classes. Students are also supported via online resources and discussion forums between classes.

Features

Learning and teaching

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.

You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Program structure

The Master consists of 144 credit points. This incorporates the Graduate Diploma (96 credit points) and the Graduate Certificate (48 credit points).

You'll complete Sustainability Project and Sustainability Body of Practice courses. Both areas are built around case studies and can also be delivered in intensive mode.

The Sustainability Project courses involve a workshop series to support you through structured inquiry and give you opportunities to share your learning.

The Sustainability Body of Practice courses explore practices from multiple disciplines that are useful for the problem-solving/managing cycle.

You can select electives from across RMIT University - from renewable energy technology to environment and planning courses.

You must do a critical interpretation of the project and program to meet the requirements for the Master of Sustainable Practice.

If you satisfy the following requirements you will be eligible for selection; however, there is no guarantee that you will be selected as demand for the program varies each intake.

Program entry requirements

You are required to have a first degree with more than 3 years experience in your first discipline area. This first degree can be in any discipline.

If you don’t possess the recognised academic qualifications, you may be considered based on evidence of experience satisfying that you have developed a level of knowledge of the field of study sufficient to undertake the Program.

Fees

Tuition fees vary according to each program and are adjusted annually.

There are 2 tuition fee types:

  • full fees where you will be responsible for the full cost
  • Commonwealth supported place (CSP) fees where your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government if you meet the eligibility criteria. There are only a small number of CSPs available.

Fee assistance

As a full fee-paying student, you may be eligible to apply for the optional FEE-HELP loan scheme to assist you to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:

  • pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or

RMIT awards more than 2000 scholarships every year to recognise academic achievement and assist students from a variety of backgrounds. Learn more about RMIT Scholarships.

Other fees

In addition to tuition fees you will also pay the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

There may be other additional expenses and administrative fees associated with your studies.
