Profile

David is currently Associate Professor (Entrepreneurship & Innovation Discipline) in the School of Management and Deputy Head (Industry Engagement) in the College of Business, having joined RMIT in 2007. He previously served as Program Director of the Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship). Prior to his career in academia, David worked extensively in international business at the highest levels, including CEO, President and Partner in both corporate and private enterprises in countries including Japan, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea as well as Hong Kong.

Duties/Responsibilities

College Level
  • Develop mutually beneficial relationships with business, government, the not-for-profit sector and the community in positioning the College of Business as the pre-eminent and preferred partner in providing Work Integrated Learning opportunities for students; stimulating industry-based collaborative research; attracting commercial research and development of executive education and training opportunities.
School of Management
  • Identify and develop potential research projects; preparation of applications for industry and government grants; supervision of postgraduate research students; mentoring, assisting and supporting the research activities of School staff.
  • Teaching a variety of courses focused around Entrepreneurship and Innovation with the Deloitte Innovation Project exemplifying an innovative applied approach to new business development

Research Projects

Current

CRC (Interactive Design) – Project Leader: in conjunction with QUT examining the use of data vizualisation in presenting XBRL – enabled aggregated data for more strategic and expedient use in executive decision-making.

Research in Learning & Teaching: In conjunction with Dr Afreen Huq aimed at ‘Enhancing Graduate Employability through Problem Based Learning in Social Entrepreneurship’

State Library Victoria Initiative in conjunction with Dr Afreen Huq, that aims to build a social entrepreneurship hub at the State Library Victoria, with specific focus on socialising international students, up-skilling unemployed youth and developing entrepreneurial capacity in regional high school students

Standardised Business Reporting for Social & Environmental Business Reporting in conjunction with Professor Heinz Schmidt (Computing Science), and Professor Florian Matthes (Technical University Munich). The project aims to develop and test a standardised, digital reporting taxonomy that will reduce future reporting burden for Australian SMEs and enable aggregation of social and environmental sustainability data at an inter-organisational level. By doing so, Government, regulatory bodies and businesses will be better positioned to make decisions that consider critical issues affecting both nation and communities such as climate change and environmental degradation hence driving more sustainable approaches to business enterprise.

RMIT-Deloitte Innovation Project. An innovative work integrated learning project in conjunction with Deloitte Touchè Tohmatsu. The purpose of this project is to provide students with a unique capability set that enhances both their employability and ability to launch and sustain their own ventures in increasingly dynamic and complex environments. Students are taken beyond the business planning for new venture creation paradigm into product/service prototyping and business model development within the Accelerated Innovation Group at Deloitte Digital.
