Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning
AskRMIT
You may be eligible for credit towards courses in your program if you have already met the learning/competency outcomes through previous learning.
To be eligible for credit towards a course, you must demonstrate that you have already completed learning that is:
- relevant
- current (and cannot have been completed more than 10 years prior to your application)
- satisfies the learning/competency outcomes of the course.
Your previous learning that satisfies these requirements might have been formal, informal, or non-formal. This determines what type of credit you should apply for.

Type of learning |
What you can apply for |
|
Formal learning: Learning completed as part of an accredited qualification, e.g. completion of a course in a bachelor degree program offered by another university. |
Apply for credit transfer. |
|
Non-formal learning: Learning through a structured program that is not part of an accredited qualification, e.g. professional development courses offered by an employer. |
Apply for Recognition of prior learning |
|
Informal learning: Learning that is not part of a structured program but is acquired through work or life experience, e.g. skills acquired through work or volunteering. |
Apply for Recognition of prior learning. |
Why apply?
Applying for credit or RPL has several benefits.
-
Learning is not duplicated
As credit and RPL allow you to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge required for a particular course you can avoid duplicating your learning. This means that you do not have to undertake the same or a similar course again leaving you free to study material that’s new and challenging. -
Pathways
Credit and RPL allow you to move easily between the TAFE and Higher Education sectors in both directions and increases educational choices and career opportunities. -
Reduced program length
Gaining credit or RPL can reduce your study load, which may mean you complete your RMIT program in a shorter time frame. For example, if you receive RPL for four courses then instead of taking three years to complete your undergraduate degree it may only take two and a half years. -
Reduced cost of study
Credit transfer and RPL can reduce the number of courses you need to study at RMIT to obtain your qualification. In higher education programs this can dramatically reduce the cost.
What to consider
Centrelink benefits
If you are receiving a benefit from Centrelink it may be affected if your study load reduces from a full-time to a part-time load. If you think you may be affected you should speak to your school about options for remaining in a full-time study load.
Visa compliance for onshore international students
Onshore international students are required to complete their study within the expected program duration (ESOS Act 2000). You need to be enrolled in a 100% load each semester unless your school has approved a reduced study load. If you are granted a block of exemptions this may change your expected program duration and you will be expected to complete in the revised time frame.
